While there are lots of baby name choices, it may come as a surprise to know that there are probably an equal number of unusual baby names, if not more. The reason most people are not familiar with the unusual baby names is because the unusual baby names are distinctly less popular and therefore not at the forefront of baby naming. Among the unusual baby names, some are made up like Dweezil, Moon Unit, or Apple (see the "Celebrity Baby Names F.A.Q. for more on this). But, not all unusual baby names are made up by celebrity parents, some are just age old names that are no longer used. Unusual baby names fall into two categories, unusual girl names and unusual boy names. In some cases an androgynous baby name can be used for both boys and girls, in one instance the name is common to one gender while less common to the other. For example, Tristan is ranked number 111 on the most popular boy names, but doesn't come up as a popular girls name at all. This, however, is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unusual names. Some unusual girl names are for the most part spelling variations on a more common name. Ashlyn and Jordyn are slightly unusual girl names while Ashley and Jordan are both more typical. Ashley is ranked number 5 and Ashlyn is 154; Jordan is 47 while Jordyn is 169. To a large extent, these "unusual girl names" are not totally off the wall. On the other hand, if someone is curious about unusual girl names, the following names are more likely what they're wondering about: Zitomira, Virendra, Prunella, and Drucilla. Unusual boy names can be just as unique as their female counterparts. There are unusual boy names that are just spelling variations, like Eric (ranked 50) and Erick (ranked 190). Braden, a slightly unusual boy name is actually popular enough to be ranked 179. While 179 may seem pretty high on the list, keep in mind that there are hundreds of boy names available. Some of the more unusual boy names are: Yeardleigh, Xadrianer, Waldemar, and Qamar. Some people may wonder if some of these unusual boy names are common in other parts of the world. Indeed that might be the case, but, for the majority of these unusual boy names it is not. For the most part, these are primarily unusual baby names because they are simply outdated. |
